The Battis is a strategic east-west footpath running parallel to the railway embankments. It is a site with great presence, an impressive brickwork arcade and should be considered a historic asset. Currently however, through it’s neglect, the Battis is seen as a no-go area for many of Romford’s residents and has been identified as the town’s “epicenter for crime”. Through cleaning and simple adjustments the Battis could be a place of cultural interest and an exciting place to journey through. A first step towards changing the perception of the Battis is the planned installation of coloured lighting that will flood the arch spaces of the viaduct.
