BERMONDSEY SQUARE: a brief for the public realm

Commission: Metal Space Ltd, Igloo Regeneration

In 2005 the WHAT IF team was commissioned by Metal to develop a brief for the public realm for the proposed Bermondsey Square development. As a starting point the WHAT IF team spray-painted two outlines onto the existing site. The first described the layout of the proposed mix-use development, the second indicated the extents of the 1339 ruins of Bermondsey Abbey that lay under the ground level.

The WHAT IF team aimed to communicate the past and future of Bermondsey Square to local residents, antique market traders (who formerly used the space) and visitors to open a debate on how this new square could be used. Following meetings with local stakeholders including residents, businesses, art organisations, market traders and the local authorities the needs and desires of these communities were gathered and reflected in the proposed design elements and planning of the new public space.
The new square was considered as a blank canvas where things are allowed to happen. On this canvas both temporary and permanent elements can be placed to provide non-economic reasons for people of all age groups to visit the square.
