Havering's green map

Greening the Romford Ring Road Commission: pilot project
Client: London Borough of Havering
Team: What if: projects (lead consultant), Inge Clemente (photography), Discover Havering, Walking volunteers

The green map project promotes Romford and the borough of Havering as a destination both for tourists and residents alike by encouraging exploration of green spaces, parks, landscapes and cultural sites within only a few minutes walk or cycle from the town centre and the ring road.
The project has been developed in collaboration with LBH Regeneration team and enriched through their wealth of knowledge, interests and archive information. The map covers a range of 7km starting from Romford train station, incorporating Havering-atte-Bower to the north and Rainham Marshes and the River Thames to the south.

It locates all of the boroughs green spaces including: country parks, nature reserves, metropolitan parks, public open spaces and the wider green belt and identifi es all of the leisure activities that are currently on offer in Havering’s public spaces such as football pitches, skateboarding sites, horse-riding, tennis courts, mini-golf courses and
bowling greens. It also pin-points places of cultural interest including sites of historic importance, landmark buildings, places of architectural interest and cultural institutions. Additionally it gives useful information of local services such as recycling points, local authority allotments and neighbourhood children’s playgrounds.

Walking and cycling is promoted through a selection of themed tours catering for a range of abilities from the experienced hiker to the gentle stroller. These routes join up Romford’s cultural sites, take you on historical journeys or simply provide rambles through it’s wealth of green spaces.

The map format is a folding pocket-sized walking and cycling guidewith a scaled plan of Havering and is accompanied by a more detailedinformation pack of each suggested walking tour.
