Greening the Romford Ring Road Commission: pilot project
London Borough of Havering 2008
Team: What if: projects (lead consultant) with Topio Ltd (landscape architect)
Support: Landlife

This project provided the first opportunity to test themes and ideas on the ground. Improvement works began on-site in September 2009.

As part of a catalogue of improvements we proposed directional ceiling graphics for the busiest subway connecting the residential hinterland to the shopping centre and malls. Sheep silhouettes refer to Romford’s past and present. Pointing toward the market they refer to the entitlement to hold cattle markets in the town since C13th. Links to the river Rom in close proximity to the roundabout are highlighted through native planingn found along the river banks and a meandering paving pattern.
