| RIBA Urban sustainability competition: Lochend butterfly, Edinburgh. 2001 Award: 3rd prize; Commendation. Exhibitions: RICS, Edinburgh (2002), Cube Gallery, Manchester (2002) Team: Gareth Morris, Eike Sindlinger, Ulrike Steven “Is a chicken’s life worth £2.79? Are the current levels of CO2 the cause of our lifestyles being unsustainable or just the result and symptom of it? Rejecting the brief, this scheme challenged the necessity of intense development. Locating only a modicum of construction to the extreme north of the site and creating a few new strategically located site accesses, the residual area of the site is largely left to naturalise. Interspersed and reinforced with new planting, the site is left with a connection accross the city through a void within the urban form. The value of the land is seen as a place for humanity to re-connect with nature. In this way the natural qualities of the site become a catalyst for regeneration of the surrounding area. Supported by a painterly and poetic site presentation, this scheme raised considerable debate. One of very few submissions primarily concerned with bio-diversity…” (jury report by Walter Menteth, architect) |
