Products made from cow waste
Cows produce 2.3 times more manure than milk. Cow dung has many applications all over the world ranging from sterlizing agent to building material.
The stall initially appears as a typical shop stand with its visual references to commercial branding. Yet on closer inspection, unlike other brands these products promote ‘life’ as opposed to ‘life-style’. The display presents typical ranges found in any high street shop including, a cosmetic range, a household cleaning range and an outdoor products section. In this case however the source of all these products is cow manure. An item generally disregarded and considered worthless now becomes elevated to an item of practical use. The labels to these products include the customary ‘instructions for use’, yet in addition there is a set of instructions for how to make them, stories of how the use of these ingredients came about and also alternative energy proposals. Thus, the product suggests to the consumer a more pro-active role and embraces the qualities associated with the spread of knowledge through communities. The attached price tags to these items indicate they are not exchangeable for money. It is intended that these products may be exchanged instead for local knowledge, ideas or
homemade products. In this respect it aims to challenge established value systems and is suggestive of an alternative economy.
